What is NFC? Everything in 2 minutes

What is NFC? Everything in 2 minutes

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a contactless technology that lets two devices exchange information when brought within a few centimetres of each other. It’s what powers contactless payment… and connected business cards.

How does it work?

An NFC chip has no battery: it’s powered by the magnetic field of the smartphone reading it. As the phone gets close, the chip transmits a link or piece of information, and the action fires instantly.

What is NFC used for day to day?

  • Contactless payment (bank card, phone).
  • Transit passes and access badges.
  • NFC business cards and connected plaques.
  • Sharing WiFi, reviews, social media.

NFC and security

The very short range (a few centimetres) limits risk: a chip can’t be read from a distance. An NFC card only stores a public link, no sensitive data.

NFC or QR code?

NFC works with a tap; QR requires opening the camera. The two are complementary — our products often include both.
